In light of the seriousness of Hurricane Helene I put together a quick overview of how the authors of “Mandate for Leadership The Conservative Promise: Project 2025,” want to cut or change various programs regarding how the federal government deals with natural disasters.
Thank you for another valuable contribution. To summarize what I’m seeing in your post:
1. Project 2025 authors don’t view human-driven climate change as settled science but as something to be treated neutrally to allow "both sides" of the argument between cranks/corporate defenders and scientists. Assuming this justifies dismantling measurement of climate change.
2. The P2025 heads assume that privatizing flood insurance will make its administration more efficient. Look at our healthcare insurance system, which is largely privatized. We pay 2 1/2 times what first-world nations pay for their universal healthcare for worse results. Many Americans are uninsured and can have their life savings wiped out. Before the ACA, insurers regularly excluded pre-existing conditions from the pool. Now apply that model to flood insurance.
3. P2025 heads believe we should move the cost of FEMA disaster responses to the states. Ah, we’ve just moved reproductive healthcare choices to the states, including abortion by choice, after rape or incest, emergency treatment that requires abortion to save lives, IVF, etc. How’s that working?! Hint: People are dying or unnecessarily injured and rendered infertile because their physicians are afraid to offer treatment that was standard before the Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade.
4. P2025 heads believe that making states share the cost of disaster relief will make them more responsible to pay their share and will reduce the tax burden of funding the federal government. What about those red states that reduce all taxes and Medicaid expansion as well? Red states will suffer disproportionately from disasters. We won’t spread the risk nationwide. And right-wing zealots will have a political message to exploit if blue states increase taxes to protect their citizens from disasters. “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job!” (George W. Bush crediting his head of FEMA after the mismanaged response to Hurricane Katrina.)
One thing though, it would be great if you had the podcasts transcribed into written form. I'm not enamored of listening to podcasts, but I really want the information you are putting out there. And transcription software has gotten pretty good what with AI and all. Any chance you might do that???
I added a transcript in the short video. I have to do that myself and proofread it for errors. It’s twice the length of a Twitter video. It’s very short.
